Atmospheric Science and Environmental Prediction Benefits from New Partnership

Thunder Bay, Ontario - September 7, 2000 - Under the terms of a new Memorandum of Understanding, Environment Canada and Lakehead University are working cooperatively to advance knowledge in atmospheric science, environmental prediction and environmental issues. The document was signed today at Lakehead University and formally recognizes the partnership which was established last spring.

The main objective of the partnership is to achieve a high level of interaction and exchange of knowledge between Environment Canada and Lakehead University. The two organizations will collaborate to undertake and promote research and development in the field of atmospheric environmental science.

"Environment Canada is enthusiastic about this cooperative scientific agreement. Success of this agreement may lead to similar programs elsewhere in the province," said Joe Comuzzi, Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay - Superior North.

"Research that improves our ability to predict weather will be of great benefit to Northwestern Ontario, especially in the forestry, tourism and transportation sectors," added Comuzzi.

Environment Canada created and staffed the position of Environmental Science Officer in Ontario Region's Thunder Bay Regional Weather Centre. Under the agreement, Dr. Hopper will also work as an adjunct professor at the University and will teach a second-year course in meteorology. Joint research efforts will focus on improving meteorological products, facilitating the exchange of meteorological expertise between other environmental scientists, and studying environmental issues particularly relevant to Northern Ontario.

"Lakehead University welcomes Dr. Hopper as an adjunct professor in Physics and is pleased that Environment Canada has partnered with the University in this way. Atmospheric science is particularly relevant to environmental, natural resources and ecological studies -- areas where this University has a number of important academic programs in place. I am certain that Dr. Hopper will make significant contributions to research and teaching at Lakehead, " said Dr. Fred Gilbert, President, Lakehead University.
