Toronto Wind Power Project Gets Government of Canada Environmental Approval

TORONTO--December 8, 2000-- As a responsible authority under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA), Environment Canada has determined that the Wind Power Project proposed by the Toronto Renewable Energy Co-operative (TREC) is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects providing that certain mitigation measures and conditions are followed.

To proceed with the project, TREC will be required to take into account mitigation measures that relate to the construction and operation of the wind turbine, as well as conditions specific to noise and bird concerns.

This determination was reached following public consultation and scientific and technical analyses of the Environmental Assessment Screening Document prepared by the TREC.

The final CEAA Screening Report is available online (search criteria "TREC"). All documents are also available on the public registry at the Environment Canada Library-Downsview, located at 4905 Dufferin Street, 3rd floor, Downsview, Ontario.

The CEAA is a federal legislation which sets out responsibilities and procedures for the environmental assessment of projects involving the Government of Canada. The Act establishes a clear and balanced process that helps responsible authorities determine the environmental effects of development projects early in their planning stage.
