Activity/Challenge Table

SUBJECT ACTIVITY - CHALLENGE
Science

Grades 4-8
Students will construct and participate in a mercury magnification predator/prey board game or students will develop an experiment/activity that demonstrates biomagnification. Students will use the virtual classroom and visit the virtual home to identify (click and point) those items in the home that contain mercury. Once they identify all the items correctly, student will be asked to select a proper disposal method. This is a stand alone learning tool or a lead-in for the household audit. Grades 4-8
Students will conduct a household audit identifying items in their homes that contain mercury. Students will then be asked to do calculations, averages, groupings and generate representative charts. Students will complete basic calculations and create charts which mathematically explain the process of biomagnification.

History & Geography (7-8)
Students will write a report on the history of mercury Students will develop an understanding of early uses of mercury by examining the fur trade to tract a beaver pelt from the Great Lakes to a hat for sale in Europe. Students will be asked to explain the term "Mad as a Hatter"
