Great Lakes Icon   Contaminated Site Remediation Section

Site RemediationSThe Contaminated Site Remediation Section provides technical advice and program support for the remediation of contaminated sites and sediments. The restoration of degraded areas contributes to ensuring compliance under the federal Fisheries Act and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and to satisfying commitments under the Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement .

The Section is involved in promoting environmental stewardship with other departments and industry towards the assessment and cleanup of contaminated sites. This has contributed to the development of guidance documents, environmental criteria, assessment reports and innovative technologies. The Section provides support to the federalContaminated Sites Management Working Group and cooperates with the Waterfront Regeneration Trust Corporation in promoting the restoration of brownfield areas on Great Lakes waterfronts.

Barge Under the Canadian Great Lakes Program the Section works through collaborative arrangements to help develop and implement Remedial Action Plans to restore designated Areas of Concern. This involves the assessment of contaminated aquatic sediments, demonstrations of removal and treatment technologies, and full-scale cleanup projects. Reporting is also undertaken on particular sediment remediation projects through the Canada-United States Binational Toxics Strategy

The Section has expertise relating to:

  • federal and provincial administrative and legislative programs for contaminated sites and sediments;
  • field sampling and analytical methodologies and techniques;
  • environmental risk assessment including federal, provincial and international environmental quality guidelines, criteria and risk assessment protocols; and,
  • site remediation technologies and experience in Ontario.
