Changing Land Use Presentation

====================================================

Lead Authors:

Ray Rivers, Environment Canada
Steve Thorp, Great Lakes Commission

Description:

Land use determines the nature of impacts on the nearshore ecosystems in the Great Lakes Basin and is the most important agent for changing those impacts. This paper describes land use trends and their impacts on the nearshore of the Great Lakes. It includes case studies illustrating the trends and some success stories or best practices and new approaches to growth management. Directed to land use decision makers in local governments, it is hoped that this paper will create awareness of the impacts of land use change on nearshore ecosystems. In addition, it may provide a framework for further research, information-sharing and policy development pertaining to the Great Lakes Basin ecosystem.

Availability:

The paper will be available on-line and in hard copy format for the SOLEC Conference on November 6-8, 1996.

Language:

English only.
