First Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas Database

Description of Information Holding:

The database consists of breeding status for each 10 kilometre square surveyed for all bird species identified in Ontario. Three levels of breeding evidence (possible, probable and confirmed) as well as a "species observed" category are identified.

Project Title:

Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario

Description of Project:

Province-wide breeding evidence for all bird species identified in Ontario are tallied by 10 km Universal Transverse Mercator squares. Maps from the First Atlas were published in book form as the "Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario", which was sold commercially. Research in compiling the Atlas data was carried out by volunteers, as well as Canadian Wildlife Service and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources staff. Data and maps from the Second Atlas (2001-2005) may be queried on-line.

Purpose of the Project:

To establish breeding evidence maps for all bird species identified in Ontario.
