Information Holding Overview

Information Holding Title:

Avian Life History Information Database

Description of Information Holding:

This database catalogues 81 variables dealing with life history characteristics of 430 Canadian breeding bird species, which fall into the following general areas: taxonomy, migration, feeding, nesting, demographics, measurements, spatial requirements, habitat and population status. This database is a combination of information compiled by John Pedlar under contract to the CWS, and the CANBIRD database, another CWS endeavour. Data specific to Ontario was used wherever possible in the database, so this data set may be less accurate for use in other regions. References are included for all variables. Taxonomic namenclature follows American Ornithologists Union (1998) standard.

Type of Information Holding:

database

Location:

across Canada

Habitat Under Study: undiked marsh, forest, island, lake, marsh, nearshore, open water, riparian, sewage lagoon, shoreline, stream, upland, watercourse, wetland, coastal marsh, diked marsh, shoreline marsh, littoral zone, bog, fen, agricultural, urban, fields

Project Information

Project Title:

Avian Life History Information

Description of Project:

Species that share life history traits are commonly exposed to a similar set of environmental conditions. Ecologists are often interested in examining how different life history groups respond to environmental changes. An important step in any such research is to compile a list of life history classifications. The general approach was to identify several good quality references (mostly secondary) for each life history characteristic and use these to classify each species.

Purpose of the Project:

To provide a computerized account of the life history characteristics for 430 bird species that breed in Canada.

Project Duration:

1990 - present
